‘The Interpreter’ by Noriko Okaku

Noriko Okaku, The Interpreter, 2015. Mixed Media + Video Installation, 6 minutes 29 seconds.

Noriko Okaku’s The Interpreter gives life to 22 tarot cards illustrated by the artist during a residency in Derby, England. Blending mysticism and whimsy, Okaku splices together figures borrowed from both tarot’s Major Arcana and Derbyshire’s local history to composite segmented creatures and environments. The flowing, surreal narrative that runs through the work is grounded in the intricate language of line work, etching, and engraving. More of the Okaku’s work can be found on the artist’s website.
