‘Untitled,’ by Shilpa Gupta, 2012

Shilpa Gupta, Untitled, 2012. Single channel video projection, 3 min 42 sec, looped.

In Shilpa Gupta’s Untitled (2012), practiced hands extract a gleaming white thread from loose, rocky soil. The finely wound thread tangles as it drops to the ground, indirectly drawing twists and curves with the unbroken white line. Like much of Gupta’s work, Untitled is tied to the artist’s interest in identity and nationality, recalling the artist’s use of thread to represent the Indian Pakistani border in her sculpture 1:14.9 (1188.5 miles of fenced border – West, North-West).
