Belgrade-based artist Nemanja Nikolić’s animation Panic Book layers 2,500 ink and charcoal drawings onto the pages of found books that originated in the former Yugoslavia. Beginning with images of marginalia found in the first pages of a book on workers’ self-management, as the video progresses the markings transform into drawn scenes of panic and fear that Nikolić excerpted from various films by Alfred Hitchcock. In Panic Book, Nikolić merges text and image, as well as drawing and cinema, to bring to light the relationship between media and social life.
